The 2025 Carol Service
Monday 15th December: 7.30pm
To celebrate Christmas, a candlelit Service of Lessons and Carols is held each year in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Tisbury. Our service this year is on Monday 15th December at 7.30pm. It will be led by representatives from the three local churches and the lessons will be read by members of the local community. The music will be led by St John’s Church Choir.
Our celebration of the Christmas story is told through a series of readings from the prophecy of the Messiah’s birth to the story of the birth itself and the visits of the shepherds and the wise men. The sequence culminates with the Prologue to St John’s Gospel: The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
The readings are interspersed with some much-loved carols as well as some less familiar ones. Carols this year include Once in royal David’s city, Hark the herald angels sing and O come all ye faithful. There are also choir carols by Sir John Rutter (who has celebrated his 80th birthday this year), Malcolm Archer and one of the choruses from Messiah by George Frederic Handel.
