Concerts for Ukraine

Fri 20th June & Sat 12th July. 7.30pm

Following last year’s successful performances, we are  holding two summer concerts in aid of Christian Aid’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

On Friday June 20th at 7.30pm, the Choir of St John’s  will perform Purcell’s ‘Rejoice in the Lord alway’ and Mozart’s Missa Brevis in D, K194, accompanied by the Westclyffe String Quintet (leader Bill Benham), Chris Mahon (organ) and conducted by Stuart Robinson, Director of Music at St John’s. In addition, Quentin Edwards will be the flute soloist in JS Bach’s Suite in B minor. With the object of the concert in mind, the evening will close with Prayer for Ukraine by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko who died in 1912.

On Saturday July 12th – also at 7.30pm –  the concert pianist Alexander Karpeyev  returns to St John’s in a programme which includes the Chopin Preludes for piano, and, with Norton Wind, an instrumental version of the Prayer for Ukraine by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Lyensko.  Norton Wind will also be playing Mozart’s great serenade in E flat K.375.

Read more about Alexander on his website.

There is no charge for admission at either concert, but there will be a retiring collection and there will be refreshments during the interval. Thanks to you, last year’s concerts were well received and raised a four figure sum for Christian Aid’s appeal.  We hope to do even better this year!
