Concert for Ukraine
Saturday 12th July. 7.30pm
Following last year’s successful performances, we will soon be holding the second of two summer concerts in aid of Christian Aid’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
On Saturday July 12th – at 7.30pm – the pianist Alexander Karpeyev returns to St John’s in a programme which includes the Chopin Preludes for piano, and, with Norton Wind, an instrumental version of the Prayer for Ukraine by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Lyensko. Norton Wind will also be playing Mozart’s Serenade in E flat K.375.
Read more about Alexander on his website.
There is no charge for admission, but there will be a retiring collection and there will be refreshments during the interval. Thanks to you, last year’s concerts were well received and raised a four figure sum for Christian Aid’s appeal. We hope to do even better this year!
The first concert took place on Friday June 20th when the Choir of St John’s performed Purcell’s ‘Rejoice in the Lord alway’ and Mozart’s Missa Brevis in D, K194, accompanied by the Westclyffe String Quintet (leader Bill Benham), Chris Mahon (organ) and conducted by Stuart Robinson, Director of Music at St John’s. In addition, Quentin Edwards was the flute soloist in JS Bach’s Suite in B minor. With the object of the concert in mind, the evening closed with Prayer for Ukraine by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko who died in 1912.
