Ash Wednesday: Lent begins
Wednesday 1st March
Ash Wednesday – falls this year on March 1st (which is also St David’s Day) and marks the start of the Christian season of Lent; a period of forty days of prayer, reflection and fasting in preparation for the joy of Easter Day.
On Ash Wednesday at St John’s Tisbury there will be two services; the normal Wednesday said service of Holy Communion at 1000. There’s a sung service of Holy Communion with Imposition of Ashes at 1930. Music includes the traditional Lent Prose and Lenten hymns including Jesu Lover of my soul – sung (as it’s St David’s Day) to the tune Aberystwyth.
During Lent, the Bishop of Salisbury the Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam is asking people to join him in prayer using Praying Together, a framework for shared daily prayer for the season. Booklets are available in church and in various electronic formats on the Salisbury Diocese website. More information here
